Our Story

Why Hanamizuki?

From Hong Kong to Toronto...

My floral journey began in Hong Kong in 2017, started an online floral shop. After relocating to Canada, I founded Hanamizuki Florist in 2022. I am thrilled to dive into the vibrant world of floral design.

The name Hanamizuki (花水木), meaning "flower, water, and wood" in Japanese, reflects our philosophy. Rooted in the wisdom of the Oriental five elements, water and wood symbolize nourishment and growth, while flowers represent achievement and flourishing. Hanamizuki is also the title of a beloved Japanese song about enduring love — a message that resonates with the nature of preserved flowers.

Beyond being a florist, I am also a social worker and therapist working with children and young people—a “slasher” who blends two passions: social work and floristry.

My floral journey began in Hong Kong, when I was working at a youth centre and leading a summer program. As part of the program, we were asked to choose a product to sell at a future art market. I decided to run a flower workshop, guiding the students to create dried flower bouquets to sell. To my surprise, the booth became one of the most popular at the market, achieving great sales and a lot of attention. That experience sparked a thought: Why not open my own flower shop as a side business?

On January 1, 2017, I launched my first Instagram shop, Flowerlover Bee, as a fresh start to the year. My goal was simple yet heartfelt—to spread love through everlasting flowers. At that time, dried flowers was just a trend, so I was among the early pioneers. I self-learn the drying techniques and bouquet arrangements, starting with modest skills and gradually refining them. Eventually, I turned my full-time job to half-time to dedicate more time to the flower business. I participated in numerous markets, organized many workshops, and fulfilled countless orders. Along the way, I invested in my growth by taking multiple floral design courses, including the Korean B.H.L Professional Flower Course, fresh flower arrangement and installation training, and even selling my creations at Japan’s handmade markets—where I enjoyed remarkable success. By 2021–2022, I had completed the AUBE Diploma and Instructor Course, preparing to launch my own certified Preserved Flower Academy before relocating to Canada in 2022.

The first year in Toronto was challenging—until one autumn day when I bought my first bunch of dried flowers at a local flower market. That moment reignited my passion. I began creating flower products again, joining markets across the city and becoming one of the pioneers in introducing preserved flowers here. And that’s where my Canadian floral chapter truly began.
